On Drivers, Passengers, and Cargo

• October 12th, 2007

After dropping Ken at the airport. I had the chance to reflect upon those times, in all our lives, when we know without a doubt, that we are in the presence of someone truly on top of his or her game.

Ken's an Ad executive at Wieden + Kennedy here in Portland. He's only forty-two yet looked ten years younger than me, two years his junior. The father of two children, both ready to start their own adult lives, Ken reminded me about my theory concerning the human hierarchy of distinct qualities, that I've come to believe, define all people as either Drivers, Passengers, or Cargo. That's it and there's very little in the way of movement between the three. Does that sound harsh or uncompromising? Maybe it's both and maybe, in life's 'Grand Plan' for us all, that's why it works.

In subsequent podcasts, it might be time to start the discussion and the analysis of what I mean by these categorizations and how we all fit into one of the three. Stayed tuned.

Come Fly With Me: I’m a Gossip Monger!

• October 10th, 2007

Flight crews are always a gamble. It's not like they're going to give a cabbie any trouble or anything. It's just that sometimes they're so, so...well odd in their own idiosyncratic way. Every occupation has its own particular culture. The airlines and their flight crews are no different. They gossip, complain, conjecture, and flat out make things up. Or do they? You be the judge of this odd little bit of gossip and decide for yourself.

Just Sit, Listen and Turn Left After Dairy Queen.

• October 6th, 2007

It goes without saying that cabbies have to be ready for anything. Sometimes that just means being there to listen. I seldom fight the urge to dole out advice and maybe that's why so few passengers seem to take it.

Drunken Brawler Declines DVDs

• September 29th, 2007

I average close to 3000 customers in the course of a year. It still amazes me that I even consider letting a guy with a bloody gash over one eye and a garbage bag over his shoulder get anywhere near my cab. For the love of filthy lucre!
